The Quiet Voice Within - How a Regulated Nervous System Creates Space for Intuition

There was a time when I thought intuition was something you either had or you didn't.

I imagined it as a special gift that some people seemed naturally connected to while others spent their lives searching for it. If I couldn't hear my own inner knowing, I assumed I simply needed to meditate more, journal more, or try harder to find the answer.

Over the years, both as a nurse and through my own personal journey, I've come to see something quite different.

I don't believe most women have lost their intuition.

I think many of us have simply been living with nervous systems that have been working incredibly hard to keep us safe.

When we're constantly juggling responsibilities, caring for others, replaying conversations in our minds, worrying about the future, or recovering from experiences that have left us feeling uncertain, our bodies naturally move into protection.

And when our nervous system is focused on protection, it makes perfect sense that the quiet voice of intuition becomes harder to hear.

Not because it has disappeared.

But because our attention is drawn towards survival.

One of the greatest gifts nursing has given me is an appreciation for the wisdom of the human body.

I've spent decades watching bodies heal, adapt, protect and compensate in remarkable ways. Our bodies are constantly working on our behalf, often without us even realising it.

Perhaps our nervous system deserves that same compassion.

Instead of asking,

"Why can't I hear my intuition?"

what if we gently asked,

"Has my nervous system simply been trying to protect me?"

That question changes everything.

It moves us away from believing something is wrong with us and towards understanding that our body has been doing exactly what it was designed to do.

The beautiful thing about intuition is that it doesn't usually arrive with urgency.

Fear feels urgent.

Anxiety feels loud.

Self-doubt has a lot to say.

Intuition is different.

It often arrives as a quiet knowing.

A gentle feeling that something is right.

A subtle sense that it's time to pause, speak up, rest, or take one small step.

Its voice is soft.

And soft voices are easiest to hear in places of safety.

I've noticed this in my own life.

The answers I'm searching for rarely appear when I'm overthinking or trying to force a decision.

More often, they find me while I'm walking quietly, sitting beside the ocean, listening to the sound of birds in the morning, or simply allowing myself a few moments to breathe without trying to solve anything.

Nothing dramatic changes.

My nervous system simply softens enough for me to hear what was already there.

Perhaps you've experienced this too.

The answer arrives while you're driving.

Or hanging out the washing.

Or standing in the shower.

Not because you finally figured it out...

but because, for a brief moment, your body felt safe enough to let the noise settle.

This has gently changed the way I think about self-care.

It's no longer about adding another thing to my to-do list.

It's about creating little moments that remind my nervous system it doesn't have to stay on high alert all the time.

A slow breath before opening my laptop.

A cup of tea without scrolling my phone.

Listening to the birds for a few moments before walking back inside.

Five quiet minutes with my journal.

These moments may seem small.

But they are invitations.

They are ways of telling our body,

"You're safe. You can soften now."

And in that softening, something beautiful often begins to emerge.

Not someone else's voice.

Not someone else's expectations.

Your own.

A Gentle Reflection for You

Rather than asking yourself what decision you need to make this week...

Perhaps ask a different question.

What would help my nervous system feel a little more settled today?

  • Maybe it's five quiet minutes.

  • Maybe it's a walk.

  • Maybe it's saying no to one thing.

  • Maybe it's asking for help.

Because sometimes the first step towards hearing your intuition isn't searching for more answers.

It's creating the conditions where your own wisdom has room to be heard.

Your intuition hasn't left you.

Perhaps it has simply been waiting...

for a little more quiet.
